Spring
March – May- ·Feed olive, cypress and shrubs once with a slow-release organic fertilizer.
- ·Light tip-prune lavender, santolina and germander to keep them dense.
- ·Top gravel or mulch back to 2 in. before the heat arrives.
- ·Check drip emitters and run a full system test.
Summer
June – August- ·Water deeply and infrequently — soak, then let the top few inches dry.
- ·Deadhead salvia, yarrow and Mexican bush sage to extend bloom.
- ·Shear lamb's ear and silver ponyfoot if they flop or brown.
- ·Hold off on fertilizer and hard pruning during heat waves.
Fall
September – November- ·Best planting window — add or replace plants now while soil is warm.
- ·Cut Mexican bush sage and yarrow back after the last flush.
- ·Shape the olive: thin interior branches for an open, airy canopy.
- ·Reduce irrigation as nights cool and rain begins.
Winter
December – February- ·Turn irrigation off during rainy stretches; watch for standing water.
- ·Hard-prune lavender, rosemary and artemisia by up to a third late winter.
- ·Weed early while seedlings are small.
- ·Protect agave and tender succulents from prolonged frost.
